Schoolgirl Snow Day!

Holidays are my faves. Honestly, I just love anything that creates an opportunity to celebrate. I think there are far to few of those moments in life. So, I'm sure you can imagine that October and December are some of my favorite months!

I have full sets of holiday jewelry for both seasons, holiday specific scarves, and hats!

I don't dress up every day of the month but I do make an effort to dress in theme as much as possible.

I just love themes, don't you? A color pallete, icons, imagery. It's like a tiny bit of order brought to the beautiful chaos that is fashion.

There are so many different colors and designs out there. Having a theme makes it easier to choose an outfit and accessorize it!

I actually started out small by doing just that. First, I started by just adding a Santa hat to my outfit the last couple weeks of December. Then some jewelry. Then dressing to match the jewelry a little more. Then I added in some holiday scarves. Then holiday nails, then I started drawing holiday icons in my makeup. Now I set a theme like "schoolgirl snow day" and try to lean into that as much as possible.

The way you dress sends a message, not only to others but to yourself. I'm sure you've heard that if you twist your face into a smile and hold it for long enough, you'll feel happier. Twist it into a sad face and you'll report feeling more sad. Our brain looks for information everywhere, even our own body. It's a little Nancy Drew, in there trying to understand itself and the world, based on any and all cues, even from itself.

When you dress a certain way, you feel a certain way. If you dress up like you're rich and sit in a nice restaurant you feel more lavish. If you dress up like a witch you feel a little wicked.

Curating your outfit then becomes a way to communicate with others and your brain, how you want to feel.

I want to feel Merry! Bright! and Joyful! So that's how I plan to dress for the rest of the year. My mood for the rest of this month:

Festive AF

So far I've had the opportunity to do four decent Holiday outfits.

School Girl Snow Day (today's post)

Blue Raspberry Candycane

Sexy Frosty the Snowwoman

Red, White, and Blue Christmas

For the Schoolgirl Snow Day I wanted to embrace the joy you used to feel when school was called on account of snow.

Suddenly a tedious and monotonous day has become a Winter Wonderland full of fun activities! You can sleigh, build snowmen, make snow angels, have a snowball fight, make an igloo! Snuggle up with some hot cocoa and a warm blanket. No matter how you spent a snowday (as a kid) it was so much fun!

My outfit featured a swing dress with a red and black plaid print. A swing dress is a dress with a fitted bust that flares out a little at the waist. This dress type is very flattering to plus size women. It accentuates your breasts and curves not your stomach. I chose a plaid print because (to me at least) it evokes images of school girls.

Over the dress I wore a floor length black duster that has a black faux fur collar and ties in front. I live in Austin, TX, so a light duster was all that was needed at night.

I chose this coat because it's light and easy to wear, goes with everything and to me gives "popular girl at school" vibes.

Btdubbs if you've ever wondered if fur/faux fur actually helps keep you more warm, the answer is: yes!!

More about swing dresses...

Jewelry:

I wore a pearl necklace to bring out the white stripes in the plaid print. Also, I don't know why but a pearl necklace just gives "good girl" vibes. For earrings I wore a set of beautiful, chunky gold and red poinsettias.

I added three simple gold rings and a diamond nose stud.

I try to always match my metals, gold with gold, silver and silver. With the one exception being my silver wedding ring. I never take it off, so about half the time it doesn't match. Other than that, I'm very strict on matching metals. I also only wear three rings other than my wedding ring. One on my pointer finger right hand, ring finger right hand, and pointer finger left hand. I have tattoos on my other fingers and it looks cluttered when I put rings on top of tattoos. Tattoos are really just permanent jewelry depending on where you get them.

For makeup I did a white corner with red eyeshadow and gold glitter on top. A small wing with dark eyeliner on top and bottom. Then I drew a snowman! It's hard to get good pics so I'll work on that but for now try to see that he has a little gold Scarf!

I paired that with red lipstick to match the red on the poinsettia earrings.
